                       Australia Under-19, Sydney Thunder, Batsman

Profile

When he played his first Test at 20, Philip Hughes became Australia’s youngest debutant in 25 years and many saw the left-handed opener as the long-term replacement for Australian great Matthew Hayden. But more of an accumulator, Hughes has his own unorthodox batting style which little resembles the burly Queenslander.

Hughes’s rise in cricket has been meteoric. His excellence earned him an A-grade at the Macksville Cricket Club aged 12, before going on to represent Australia in the 2007 Under-19 World Cup. Following the age cricket World Cup, the youngster enjoyed an outstanding first class season with NSW scoring 559 runs at an average of 62.11. His heavy scoring continued the following season before he was brought in as Hayden’s replacement for the 2009 away tour to South Africa.

It wasn’t a dream start with the first innings lasting only 4 balls but in the 2nd innings, Hughes replied with a brilliant 75 and followed it up with two tons in the following Test. A few low key performances have since cast a shadow on his place in the side but Hughes’ task in future will be to make an indelible mark on the international stage.

Hughes has won the NSW Rising Star Award (2007), Sheffield Shield ‘’Player of the Year’’ (2007-08) and ‘’Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year’’ (2009) awards.
In 2009, he also became the youngest player to be awarded the ‘Steve Waugh Medal’; an award given to NSW’s best player of the season.
